The cricketing best?

Posted in Current affairs, News, Sports by rickychopra on July 20, 2008

So Sunil Gavaskar says that Tendulkar is a better cricketer than Bradman was. Afterall, he beat Bradman’s century record. Everything is about numbers. I agree. But sometimes I don’t like to. Or don’t want to. And this is one of those times. Is Tendulkar bigger than the man himself, I mean Sir M. Gavaskar. Catching in the slip, late brushing and you asked what, he just produced everything which I and my pals tried duplicating for years in the narrow cricketing lanes of Radhey Puri. Cricket to us was all about technique. And he was the man of it. Swing. Hook. Drop. Or duck. No one did it better, while I admit that Sir Vivian Richards was a close runner. Even knowing well that Tendulkar is the contemporary best, I maintain that the joy the Sr. little man’s game gave was more profound than the Jr.’s. And as for Sir. Bradman, I’d have to watch videos, if there are any.

Making money…patents or not

Ranbaxy is a generic drug maker. Daiichi Sankyo is not. They both have completely different industry representations.

The drug making giants will face huge losses between 2010 and 2012, when many of world’s hottest selling and patent protected medicines lose their IP and fakes start to skirt the international marketplace top- speed.

In this rests the logic of Daiichi proffering to Ranbaxy. Good move? Yes, only if exploits like these really bring the prices down, which in the light of enormous size differences between the large companies and generic drug makers looks difficult. In spite of everything, what rule the marketplace are economies of scales.

Red gone…time to write in black

Now with the Left powers gone, and if the Congress hangs on to rule, billions of dollars of disinvestments could bridge the multi-billion dollar budget deficits, ultimately safeguarding consumers from the rising gas prices and inflation, to a big degree. And the good news could be, if he has the guts, that the Indian PM ensues on with the privatization efforts much before the elections on May or whenever. With the red forces moving out, other chief strategy plans like permitting outsiders to invest in the Indian retail et cetera also can see some action now.

LIVE AND LET SURVIVE.

Posted in Uncategorized by rickychopra on July 7, 2008

There can be three stages in man’s existence on earth. He may Survive and then possibly Live and then possibly Thrive. With at least 3000 Kilo calories per day for each person, we produce enough food for us all. Yet, millions die without food. We have not acted. When are we going to act? It’s difficult. We are busy. Busy in our Live stage. But are we really trying to live OR we are busy filling the gap, the gap between our Living and Thriving, always trying to get to the Thrive stage. And more than half of us will not be able to fill that gap, as evidenced time and again by Time itself, for folks who joined this race much before us. Without going into the subject of ‘even what if we are able to fill that gap’ and leaving the premise of readers’ dreams and ambitions untouched by my words, I doubt if the endeavor of filling the gap itself is worth it. I am not sure. However, I am sure we, even individually can fill at least a few hundred stomachs in our life span. OR fill our own stomachs a few million times more than required for its natural fill. Let’s not just Survive but Live. But let’s just not Live but also assist others Survive so that they could progress and start to Live. Each of us is an ocean of energy – LET’S not drown in ourselves. Decision is ours. Death is theirs. We have, but one life. let US DO something – WHATEVER we can, but not whenever we can. now.

Spain… all the way

Changing the guard at the Wimbledon, Nadal beat Federer in almost 4 and a half hours of hard hitting play in just about total darkness. Though I could just see about the last 35 minutes of play I believe I saw the best moments in this Wimbledon history’s longest final match ever. Though the Spaniard is the first man to win the French Open and Wimbledon end-to-end ever since Bjorn Borg did it in 1980, what makes the man special is when while lifting the cup he goes on say that Federer is the best, in victory or in defeat.

Spain winning the Euro 2008 and now Nadal capturing this unforgettable moment for his country, I wish I was born in Spain.

What ails the Indian Intellectual Property movement?

What ails the Indian Intellectual Property movement?

In the US of A, the entrepreneurs are as dynamic as the government, like I have observed. In India, for the past couple of years the Government has been doing fantastically well in so far as the patent movement is concerned. What we lack is a genuine exertion by the entrepreneurs of their IP. One reason for this is that the CEOs here not only do not recognize the wonders an IP can perform, but also have no access to illuminative means which can lead to this recognition. In all my interviews with Indian corporate managers the one common thing I’ve always heard is ‘We have been thinking about it but…you know…’. Yes we think a lot. And we do act a lot. However both our thinking and our actions are always aiming for the nearest profit. We run our companies with only one thing in mind - how fast can we sell that we produce? But do we identify all that we produce? Like a man can execute only one vocation to his best of ability, similarly an organization also does best what it does. Nonetheless, there are many gifts that are bestowed upon us as spin-offs of our corporate efforts. And the biggest of those gifts is Intellectual Property. Without going into the legal definition of Intellectual Property I will try to explain what exactly IP is.

Everything we see around us is the result of man’s mind. And many a times it is the result of just one mind. It may be a person or an organizational unit. And if we have been justifying for centuries the exchange of products between men for value (read money), how can we not put some value on the fact that products be recognized as original thoughts of the respective producers. Who is stopping us? Not a soul. These products are the direct results of all the strain of brains we went through in bringing them to life. Can’t we claim that whosoever uses those products without being the part of hard work that we went through pays us not only for that product’s use(s) but also for our efforts? Now, if none wants to pay for that particular aspect connected with the product, so be it. That is what democracy and market forces are all about. But how do we come to know it unless we do not try to sell it. There is a treasure chest waiting to get unlocked. It contains trade names, business methods, software processes, writings and much more than we can envision at one go. Are we ready?

Never ever trust a client who after your brilliant sales presentation says ‘Alright Mr. Nice, we’d let you know’. Actually, he did not only want to tell you that he will never call you again but also wanted you to know that yours is the most distorted firm on the face of this planet and for the price you just quoted for your services he can buy a truck full of dogs to tear away the skin out of you and leave you so far off that you will forget the way to come roaming around his offices again.

I always say that the 2 most honest places with the 2 most honest people of the moment at their 2 most honest moments are:

  1. Your kitchen - when you are helping your wife clean the dishes after your guests have left and she tells you that your friend’s joke on which everyone laughed their hearts out was not only bad but silly and that your friend’s wife’s outfit was not only ill-fitting but gauche. You agree and say I love you darling.
  2. Your friend’s car – when they are on their way back home after dinner at your place and he tells his wife that the food which they ate plates-full did not only look stale, it smelled like Rajpal Yadav in Bhootnath. His wife agrees and says I love you darling.

Whatever goes on before that, over food and wine is nothing but Time in action trying to lay the ground so that people can be a little honest after a little while.

Don’t think little of the ‘I love you’ part. It is another most honest moment….. honestyis thebestpolicy wise speaking

Everyday life

Maintaining the writing for this blog for the weekends, I shall be attenuating it with my quotes over the week days. I don’t call  them writings . I call them ‘everyday life’. And here are two:

Everyday life #1: We can not eventually be utter failures or completely successful. We pass. We fail. Pass. Fail. And so forth. The preparation which goes on in between is Life.

Everyday life #2: A man is not powerful because he is powerful. Neither is he powerful because we know he is powerful. He is powerful because he knows that we know he is powerful. Try telling a 3 yr old palyful child in the supermarket that the gentleman with his pants’ zipper open is the President of America. He will still go and laugh at his face.
